Coconut Chutney

Coconut is a popular ingredient in South Indian cooking, and South Indian coconut chutney makes the most of it. This mild chutney is not just the perfect companion for idlis (South Indian steamed rice cakes), dosas (South Indian rice and lentil pancakes), and uttapams (south Indian rice pancakes), it is the perfect accompaniment or side dish to lots of other foods. It also makes a terrific sandwich spread! 

INGREDIENTS:

3/4 CUP COCONUT (GRATED)
1 TBSP CHANA DAL
1 TBSP GROUND NUT
1 TBSP CUMIN SEEDS
2 GREEN CHILLIES
1 GARLIC CLOVE
1 SMALL PIECE GINGER
1 SMALL PIECE TAMRIND
TO TASTE SALT
WATER

SEASONING/TADKA:

3/4 TBSP GHEE
1/4 TSP MUSTARD
1 TBSP URAD DAL
1 SPRIG CURRY LEAVES
1 RED CHILLI ( DRY)
PINCH AESOPHOTIDA /HING

Take a mixer jar and add coconut, chana dal, groundnut, cumin seed, tamarind, green chilli, garlic, ginger, salt.


Grind it to fine paste using little water at a time.


Now take a Tadka pan .     

 Add ghee, hing, urad dal and let it cook for some time.

Once the urad dal starts to change its colour, add mustard.


Then add red chilli.


Then curry leaves and let it cook for sometime.


Once cooked properly , add it to the above coconut paste.


Your coconut chutney is ready.


Serve it with dosa, idli, vada or any south indian dish and it will enchance the taste of the food.

EXTRA INFO:

  • You can skip garlic, ginger tamarind is you wish so or if you do not eat it. Chutney will still taste yummy.
